Within the San Francisco bay area, there are no shortages when it comes to stumbling upon bakeries and pastry shops. However, it can definitely be a challenge for a shop to separate themselves from the rest of the pack in terms of quality, execution, and presentation.
Listed below are the 5 Best Bakeries in San Francisco that have excelled at all of the aforementioned qualities in 2020:
1) b. patisserie
One of the highest rated pastry shops in the bay area, B Patisserie definitely lives up to the hype. Their style can be described as modern French with American flavors. With items ranging from kouign-amann, croissants, bostocks, gingerbread, almond cakes, and scones, the possibilities are nearly endless. On top of that, they also offer coffee, macarons (on weekdays), tartines, and sandwiches.
What makes B Patisserie so memorable is their exceptional service, spacious environment, and fresh items. This is a spot that you definitely don’t want to miss out on.
2) Tartine Bakery
Although the wait can be quite long, Tartine Bakery absolutely delivers in every way possible. Located within the Mission district, it’s easily accessible and within walking distance from the BART station. Everything from the cozy interior of the shop to the selection of the pastries will be sure to impress. It’s recommended to arrive earlier in the day so you don’t miss out on what they have to offer.
You can find fan favorites such as the banana cream tart, morning bun, lemon meringue cake, and ham & cheese croissant. You can also order hot pressed sandwiches and salads during their lunch hours as well.
3) Third Culture Bakery
Where do I even start? Third Culture Bakery has some of the most incredible pastries that you can find. Their mochi muffins are a complete game changer. The two owners, Sam Butarbutar and Wenter Shyu, have spent years perfecting their ingredients, and it clearly shows.
For their mochi muffins, you can find flavors such as the Original, Thai Tea, Matcha, and Ube. Just recently, they have also started rolling out their brand new mochi donuts that come in a wide variety of flavors. Although the official storefront for Third Culture Bakery is located in Berkeley, you can still find the mochi muffins and mochi donuts at various coffee shops and boba spots throughout San Francisco including Boba Guys, Ballast Coffee, Foodhall, and Pinhole Coffee.
4) Mr. Holmes Bakehouse
In terms of creativity, Mr. Holmes Bakehouse has some of the most unique and exclusive pastries. Known for their infamous cruffin (croissant + muffin hybrid), this alone is worth visiting for. The cruffin flavors are rotated daily, so remember to check their weekly menu. Other items include flavored donuts, croissants, and cookies.
Although small in size, the interior is also a popular spot for Instagram photoshoots. A large neon sign can be seen that says “I Got Baked In San Francisco”. The popularity and quality of Mr Holmes Bakehouse has been consistent throughout the years and it definitely remains a staple within the city.
5) Enter the Cafe
Located on Powell St in San Francisco, Enter the Cafe is a family-owned business that offers a variety of special pastries that can only be found exclusively here. On their menu, you can find items such as the popular mochi waffles, cream-filled croissants, artisan Intelligentsia coffee, ice cream, and sandwiches.
On Saturdays only, the croissants are supplied by the vendor Baker Doe who specializes in Asian-French fusion pastries. The flavors rotate on a weekly basis and remain secretive, so you’ll always be in for a surprise during each visit. The aesthetics of the shop are inspired by Bruce Lee, which you can see art murals related to him all around. This was truly one of the most unique shops that I’ve been able to frequent when visiting the city.
